Emetophobia on TV in America!

An emetophobe living in America appeared on the 'Dr. Phil' show on Tuesday 6 September 2005.

Carey's fear of vomiting causes panic attacks and makes her unable to eat, sleep or travel far from her home.   Carey says her phobia makes her feel like "the strangest person in the world."

"The thought of vomiting or anybody else around me throwing up is absolutely the most terrifying thing," says Carey, who suffers from emetophobia. "If I hear somebody coughing, I panic. I don't travel on airplanes. And I'm not afraid of crashing, I'm afraid of me getting air-sick or people around me getting air-sick. I worry about myself vomiting every hour of every single day."

Read the interview on Dr Phil's site at: http://www.drphil.com/shows/show/417

Carey was supposed to actually travel across America to the TV studio but, of course, like most emets know, travel can be extremely difficult.  Despite her best efforts to do so, she didn't manage to make the 4 hour flight so the interview was conducted by phone instead and will be broadcast on the show.

Well done to Carey for taking part, sharing her experiences and helping to raise the profile of emetophobia.

Although broadcast in America, possibly the show can be received via satellite in other countries(?).  There is also a section on the site selling tapes and transcripts of previous shows.

NOTE FROM GUT REACTION'S FOUNDER:

Gut Reaction's Online Forum

Following the success of the Guestbook, a new FORUM has been added to this site to allow emetophobes and anyone wishing to learn more about emetophobia to discuss the condition and coping strategies.

At present, this is undergoing a trial to ensure that it does not exceed webspace and bandwidth allocations.  Currently it is unmoderated but if the facility is abused (eg by spammers) then the facility will have to be withdrawn.  On a more positive note, I hope this will be a welcome new resource.
