HOMEOPATHY
was introduced by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German Physician in the
18th century. He was appalled by the medical practices currently in
use and sought a method of healing which would be safe, gentle and
effective.
His underlying belief was that the human body has a tremendous capacity to
heal itself and, on this basis, introduced the concept of treating 'like with
like'. He produced a range of remedies from animal, mineral and plant
sources, reasoning that instead of suppressing symptoms, they should actually be
stimulated in order to encourage and assist the natural healing processes of the
body. An example of this is illustrated when he ingested an
infusion of quinine and it produced symptoms of malaria. However, when it
was given to a patient suffering from genuine malaria, it alleviated the
symptoms.
The remedies used are greatly diluted to establish the smallest effective dose which is the optimum way of avoiding side-effects and the second principle of homeopathy - that the more dilute a remedy is - the more effective it becomes.
Homeopathy focuses upon treating the patient holistically rather than just the presenting disease and prescribes on a more individual basis.
