I have no personal experience of Emotional Freedom Technique but have been advised that it might help anxiety and/or emetophobia.

With this in mind, and the permission of the authors, I have included information I have received from EFT practitioners below:

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE FOR EMETOPHOBIA

This technique uses all sorts of different methods to address different areas of the brain which are involved in emotional issues.  It has been devised over many years by psychologists and psychiatrists and others who have worked with people who have severe or less severe emotional issues.  It does work in 99.9% of cases, so I strongly recommend its use.

  1. Think about the issue

This literally means imagining how you would feel now this minute if someone was sick at your feet or if you were about to be sick.

  1. Create a statement which encompasses the reality of the feelings as precisely as possible, using present tense.

For example: “ I feel terrified/horrified/utterly petrified/disgusted…. when anyone vomits near me” or “I absolutely cannot bear the idea of vomit” or “I am utterly revolted by the sight and smell of vomit” or “If I think I might be sick I shake and sweat with fear” whatever statement resonates with you.  Start with one – the one which affects you most – you may feel there are dozens you could use, make a note of them all and just work through them, but start with one simple statement which expresses your worst feelings.

When creating your statement, always use words expressing feelings, not conditions ie don’t use the word ‘emetophobia’, rather use ‘vomit’ or ‘sick’ etc.

  1. Place words “Even though I feel/experience/suffer…… I deeply and completely accept myself” round the statement.

You may think that this is dotty or find it hard to envisage saying this, but it WORKS, so do not scoff at it, just do it, as they say.

  1. Tune into the intensity of the feelings you are expressing and give them an  intensity rating between 1 and 10, with 10 being the highest. Make a note of this figure.

  1. Locate tender spots below collarbone and massage whilst repeating affirmation 3 times.

Place your finger in the dip at the base of your throat between the two ‘knobs’ of your collarbone. Slide it one inch down and one inch to the left or right.  Somewhere around there you should be able to locate a small, slightly tender area, just below the bone. If you don’t feel a tender are, just remain at that point using the above method to locate it, massaging the area with three fingers whilst repeating your affirmation three times thus: “Even though I feel terrified when anyone vomits near me, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  1. Select a brief reminder phrase from your affirmation e.g. “this fear of vomiting” “this horror of vomit”

  1. Tap the following meridian points with 2 fingers quite firmly (but not enough to hurt) several times whilst repeating reminder phrase 3 times:

v   Inner corner of eyebrow

v   Outer side of eye socket – on bone

v   under eye – in the middle of socket, on bone

v   under nose – on upper lip

v   crease in middle of chin halfway between lower lip and chin bone

v   collarbone – actually on the bone, midway

v   underarm – level with nipple

v   thumb - outer edge, level with nail

v   index finger – edge nearest thumb, level with nail

v   middle finger – as above

v   little finger – as above (note, no ring finger)

v   karate chop – halfway between little finger joint and wrist joint on side of hand.

  1. close eyes and open them

  1. tap gamut* whilst (keeping head still) eyes hard down left, right, round anti-clockwise, clockwise.

*The gamut is on the back of the hand, just one inch above the ‘web’ between the ring finger and little finger.

  1. hum happy birthday (first line only)
  1. count to 5
  2. hum happy birthday (first line only)
  3. pause
  4. repeat sequence from 5. to karate chop
  5. take intensity reading as before, by concentrating on issue.

At this point you may find that you can’t actually focus on the issue – this is good news and means that it is working.  It usually means the rating has dropped to 0.  If your rating has dropped by several points but is not 0, then go to 16 below.  If it has not dropped at all, then drink a glass of water, or better still, go for a brief walk (2 or 3 mins) in the open air then repeat whole sequence. You might consider changing your statement at this stage.

  1. Repeat, altering statement and reminder phrase to reflect change. (“this remaining fear of vomiting or this remaining feeling of disgust at someone vomiting near me…..” etc.)

  1. Repeat until issue resolves completely.

As you repeat the sequence, you may well find that other issues surface, for example memories, or fears or awareness of sensations – as these arise, tap for them, go with what is happening, rather than sticking to your first thought.

Using this technique in conjunction with Australian Bush Flower remedies has been particularly effective for me and those I have treated.

I am happy to discuss this with anyone who would like to take this route.

Also .....  here's a letter received from a UK therapist practising EFT together with a link for further information.

I've just had a look at your excellent site, which I found interesting.

I have recently had a client who I believe had emetophobia, who I have been able to help considerably using a technique which is not on your site, which I believe would be of interest to others.

Angela came to see me at the end of July.  Her symptoms were that she felt anxiety/panic all day every day about the possibility of being sick - as she described it she was terrified of it.  She had been feeling like this pretty constantly from age 12 to now aged 57.  She habitually carried as many as six packets of travel sickness pills in her handbag and wouldn't go anywhere without them.

By the end of the first session, she threw away all the pills and has not bought any since.  Her anxiety was also greatly reduced.

At the beginning of September, she called me again, saying that it had "come back".  She admitted that she still hadn't bought any pills and that day to day she was still fine.  There had however been two circumstances that we hadn't originally dealt with where she felt bad again.  Specifically, this was - once when she was actually feeling ill herself and got anxious that she would be sick and secondly she was soon going to have to take her father into hospital and she got anxious whenever she thought about going into the hospital.  So we had a second session to deal with these specific aspects of her condition which we had not covered in the first session.

The next call I had got was at the end of October, when she again reported that day to day was fine and that she had been OK in the hospital except when she had actually heard someone being sick.  Also she had recently been with her mother in a nursing home when she had been sick and now couldn't bring herself to go back in.  Again we dealt with these specific cases and Angela was able to leave feeling fine.  I was even able to tell her a story about projectile vomit which caused her no reaction whatsoever.  Since then, as far as I know she has had no problems.

What I was was using was EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques.  It is an extraordinary system for helping people deal with just about any emotion, quickly and simply.  It's based around the idea that "all emotions are caused by an imbalance in the body's energy system" and that by balancing the energy system as you think about the problem, then the emotion simply cannot happen.  It can also be done over the phone, which is great for anyone who finds it hard to get out!
