COGNITIVE THERAPY: This seeks to teach the patient a more constructive way of thinking about a problem and is based largely upon faulty 'thinking styles' such as "I'll feel sick if I do that . . . " The idea is to rationalise thoughts by questioning the validity of statements made so that you examine the evidence for them and, theoretically, negative thinking will be recognised and overcome. However, if there is a physical underlying cause for the nausea, then this might not be as appropriate. As far as our emetophobia is concerned, the optimum of the above approaches could possibly be a combination of Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Therapy jointly. These would not (necessarily) involve confronting the fear or undergoing any 'Systematic Desensitisation' in which we would have to look at pictures of 'the dreaded', watch videos of vomiting (simulated or the real thing), dangle our hands into anything unpleasant and would certainly not include having to consume an emetic or deal with the result of one!
