Anti-Emetic Medication: For 'Type 2' Emetophobes who suffer from
nausea which is not induced by anxiety, these are probably the more
appropriate option since, if the nausea is prevented or reduced, the
associated anxiety will similarly be prevented or reduced. Anti-emetic
preparations include antihistamines such as cinnarizine, cyclizine and promethazine. Other commonly prescribed anti-emetics
include domperidone (Motilium) and metoclopramide (Maxolon). Some
anti-psychotics (above) have anti-emetic properties.
Serotonin-3 receptor antagonists (Granisetron [Kytril], Ondansetron [Zofran] and Tropisetron [Navoban]) are used to relieve the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and cancer patients. They are most effective on the first day after chemotherapy. Newer NK1 receptor antagonists are currently undergoing trials and seem to eradicate vomiting caused by motion sickness, radiotherapy, chemotherapy in animals. It is uncertain whether they reduce nausea as trials to date have been on animals who cannot describe their physical symptoms to scientists!
