ACUPUNCTURE
is a form of Chinese medicine
which involves inserting fine needles into acupuncture points.
Vital energy 'chi' is believed to flow along energy pathways, a map of meridians, around the body. If any of these become blocked then illness will result. Similarly, if any of these contain stagnant energy, this can lead to illness. By inserting needles into specific points on the meridians, the flow of energy is stimulated and can lead to healing and recovery from illness.
It is especially recommended for nausea, digestive problems, hypertension and pain relief and has been used, with varying results, to treat panic attacks and anxiety.
Acupressure is similar but involves applying pressure to points rather than using needles. One example of this is used by 'Sea Bands' - wrist bands with a nodule exerting pressure on the Nei Kuan point on the wrist (approximately 3-fingers width down the wrist from the wrist/palm crease and between the two tendons).
It isn't a practical option for most needle-phobics!
